Melbourne Wine Escapes

Melbourne Australia is a city known for good food and even better wine. Victoria alone contains over 350 wineries, all producing quality and award-winning drops every year. If you're still not convinced that Melbourne Victoria truly is the wine capital of the eastern states, take a trip and find out (it's the perfect excuse for a tipple!). The best part: the wineries are all just a short trip from the city.

The Yarra Valley wine region is probably the most well-known area, and boasts over 55 wineries. The Yarra Valley is just an hour and a half east of Melbourne city, and offers everything from vineyards owned by families, to famous labels such as Chateau Yering.

Another area that is just over an hour from Melbourne city is the Mornington Peninsula wine region. Sweeping sea views and fantastic food are just two of the many drawcards for Mornington Peninsula, the other being the over 170 vineyards.

Across the bay in Geelong lies the respected, yet smaller Geelong wine region. The area produces estate grown wine, and is at the gateway to the gorgeous Great Ocean Road.

A short drive from the Tullamarine Airport and you'll find the Sunbury wine region, which started in the 1800s. The Sunbury area favours peppery shirazes, and is also known for its chardonnay. A bit further north will bring you to the Macedon Ranges, lying beneath the famous Hanging Rock.

Melbourne is not just a city for culture and entertainment as any wine aficionado will tell you; it is also one of the best areas for wine in Australia.
